Stay Active This Christmas

Christmas is a wonderful time for celebration, but it's easy to let fitness slip when you're caught up in the festivities. As a personal trainer with over 15 years of experience helping clients across Hale Barns, Sale, and Altrincham, I know that staying active over Christmas doesn't mean missing out on the fun - it means enjoying it even more.

Why Staying Active at Christmas Matters

The Christmas period typically spans around two weeks - from work winding down in mid-December through to the New Year. That's enough time for fitness levels to noticeably decline and for extra weight to creep on. The average Brit gains between 2-5 pounds over the festive season, and research shows that most of this weight is never lost.

But here's the thing: staying active over Christmas isn't about gruelling gym sessions or strict regimes. It's about maintaining momentum, keeping your body moving, and supporting your mental health during what can be a stressful time of year.

Better Digestion

Movement helps your body process all that Christmas dinner. A post-meal walk aids digestion and helps regulate blood sugar after those mince pies.

Energy Boost

Feeling sluggish after too much telly? Even a short bout of exercise releases endorphins and boosts energy levels, helping you feel less lethargic.

Stress Relief

Family gatherings, present shopping, cooking - Christmas can be stressful. Exercise is one of the best natural stress relievers available.

Quality Time

Active pursuits can be a brilliant way to spend time with family. A Boxing Day walk or garden kickabout creates memories and burns calories.

Realistic Ways to Stay Active Over Christmas

Forget the unrealistic expectations of maintaining your normal workout routine. Christmas calls for flexible, enjoyable movement that fits around your celebrations.

1

The Post-Dinner Walk

This is a British Christmas tradition for good reason. After Christmas dinner, get everyone wrapped up and head out for a 20-30 minute walk. The fresh air works wonders, you'll feel less stuffed, and it's lovely time together before settling in for the evening. If you're in Hale Barns or Altrincham, Dunham Massey is perfect for this.

2

Morning Movement Ritual

Before the chaos begins, take 10-15 minutes for yourself. A quick stretch routine, some bodyweight exercises, or a brisk walk round the block. Do this before everyone wakes up or before heading to relatives. It sets a positive tone for the day.

3

Active Games

Suggest active games instead of just sitting about. A garden football match, charades, musical chairs, or dancing to Christmas songs all count. Even a game of Wii Sports or Just Dance gets everyone moving and laughing.

4

Boxing Day Ramble

Make Boxing Day your active day. Many families have made the Boxing Day walk a cherished tradition. Pack a thermos of tea, wrap up warm, and explore your local area. Around Sale and South Manchester, the Bridgewater Canal offers lovely flat walking routes.

5

The 'Twixmas' Workouts

Those quiet days between Christmas and New Year are perfect for getting back to more structured exercise. Gyms are often quieter, the weather's not too bad for outdoor runs, and you've got time on your hands. Use this window to maintain your fitness base.

6

Living Room Workouts

When it's cold and dark outside, a quick living room workout is your friend. Push-ups, squats, lunges, planks - no equipment needed. Even 15 minutes makes a difference. Do it while watching Christmas films if you like!

A Simple Christmas Week Fitness Plan

Here's a realistic approach to staying active from Christmas Eve through to New Year's Day:

24

Christmas Eve

Morning walk or workout - get it done before the festivities begin. Last chance for a proper session!

25

Christmas Day

Post-dinner family walk (20-30 mins). That's it - enjoy the day!

26

Boxing Day

Longer walk or family activity (45-60 mins). Make it a tradition!

27

27th December

28

28th December

29

29th December

30

30th December

Home workout or walk - keep the momentum going.

31

New Year's Eve

Morning session to start the year strong. You'll thank yourself!

1

New Year's Day

Gentle walk to blow away the cobwebs. Fresh start energy!

Quick Home Exercises for Christmas

No equipment? No problem. Here's a simple circuit you can do in your living room in 15 minutes:

15-Minute Christmas Circuit (3 rounds)

  • 20 Bodyweight Squats
  • 10 Push-ups (knees if needed)
  • 20 Alternating Lunges
  • 30-second Plank
  • 20 Jumping Jacks
  • 10 Tricep Dips (using a chair)

Rest 60 seconds between rounds. Total time: approximately 15 minutes.

The Right Mindset for Festive Fitness

The most important thing is to be kind to yourself. Christmas is not the time for strict diets or punishing workout regimes. It's about maintaining a base level of activity that keeps you feeling good without taking away from the enjoyment of the season.

  • Something is always better than nothing - a 10-minute walk beats sitting all day
  • Don't aim for perfection - aim for consistency and enjoyment
  • Make it social - involve family and friends where possible
  • Listen to your body - rest when you need to
