(And What You Actually Need)

The short answer: I bring everything. The longer answer — including the full kit list, how much space you need, and whether home training is as effective as the gym — is below.

The Short Answer

You need to provide: a clear space about 2 metres x 1 metre.

That's it. I bring everything else — weights, bands, a mat, a foam roller, a suspension trainer, and a fully personalised programme. Whether you're in a flat in Sale or a large house in Hale Barns, the kit covers any goal: fat loss, strength, HIIT, mobility, or a mix of all four.

The full equipment list

Here's exactly what comes in the kit bag to your home in Hale, Altrincham, Sale, Hale Barns, or Bowdon — and what each piece is used for.

Weights & Resistance

Adjustable dumbbells — Range from 2kg to 32kg — covers everything from mobility warm-ups to heavy compound lifts
Kettlebells — Multiple weights. Used for swings, carries, Turkish get-ups, and functional strength work
Resistance bands — Light, medium, and heavy. For activation, assisted movements, and standalone resistance training
Barbell + plates — Available for clients who want powerlifting-style programming (brought to first session on request)

Functional & Cardio

Suspension trainer (TRX-style) — Attaches to any door or tree. Opens up 50+ bodyweight and loaded exercises in a tiny footprint
Skipping rope — For cardio intervals, warm-ups, and conditioning circuits without needing any space to run
Agility ladder — Used in HIIT and sports conditioning sessions. Folds flat in the kit bag
Plyo box / step — For step-ups, box jumps, elevated push-ups and split squats

Recovery & Mobility

Exercise mat — Full-length, non-slip. You don't need to provide a mat or clear a yoga space
Foam roller — Used in warm-ups and cool-downs for myofascial release and injury prevention
Massage ball — Targeted trigger point work, particularly for glutes, shoulders, and feet
Stretch strap — For assisted flexibility work and active mobility in cool-downs

Tracking & Programming

Interval timer — For HIIT, Tabata, and circuit training — manages rest and work periods precisely
Heart rate monitor — Used to track training intensity and ensure you're working in the right zone
Session notes & programme — Your personalised programme is brought to every session, updated as you progress
Body composition tracker — For clients with fat loss or muscle-building goals — tracks progress objectively

What you don't need to provide

One of the most common questions I get before a first session is: "Do I need to buy anything?" The answer is always no. Here's the full list of things that are genuinely not required:

A treadmill or cardio machine
A weight bench
A pull-up bar
Dumbbells or weights of any kind
A gym mat or yoga mat
A foam roller
Resistance bands
A spare room or dedicated gym space
A large garden
A garage or basement
Any fitness equipment at all
A gym membership

How much space do you actually need?

The most common worry people have before booking home PT is space. Here's how it actually works in different home setups:

Flat or apartment— Works perfectly

A clear living room floor space of 2m x 1m is all you need. We work around furniture and adapt exercises accordingly. Most flats in Hale, Sale, and Altrincham have more than enough room.

Terraced or semi-detached house— Works perfectly

Living room, lounge, or bedroom — any clear floor space works. If preferred, sessions can also move to the back garden when weather allows.

Large house with garden— Extra options available

More space opens up more exercise variety — loaded carries, sprint intervals, sled work. We can alternate between indoor and outdoor depending on the session and weather.

Very small space / studio flat— Still works — with adaptations

Even the smallest spaces can accommodate a full resistance and strength programme. We focus on suspension training, bands, and bodyweight progressions. Alternatively, we can move to a local park — I cover all parks across Hale, Altrincham, and Sale.

Is home PT as effective as training at the gym?

This is the question that matters most. The honest answer: yes, for the vast majority of goals. Here's why.

GoalHome PTUnsupervised gym
Fat loss✅ Highly effective⚠️ Only with a plan
Strength building✅ Fully achievable✅ With progression
Muscle building (hypertrophy)✅ To an advanced level✅ With heavy loading
Cardiovascular fitness✅ HIIT, circuits, skipping✅ Machines available
Mobility & flexibility✅ Built into every session⚠️ Often skipped
Accountability & results✅ Every session❌ Self-directed only
Powerlifting / heavy barbell⚠️ Barbell on request✅ Full equipment

The key insight

Research consistently shows that free-weight and bodyweight training produces equivalent strength and fat loss results to machine-based gym training when progressive overload is applied. The limiting factor is almost never the equipment — it's having a good programme and a coach who keeps you progressing. That's exactly what home PT provides.

Who is home personal training best suited to?

Based on 15 years of delivering home sessions across Hale, Altrincham, Sale, Hale Barns, and Bowdon, these are the people who get the most from it:

Busy professionals — No travel time. Sessions fit around an early morning or post-work schedule. In and out in 45–60 minutes with no commute.
Parents of young children — No childcare needed. The kids can be in the next room — or the garden. Sessions happen around school runs and nap times.
People returning after a long gap — Home training removes the intimidation of a public gym. You start at your own pace in a private space, with a PT adapting everything to your current level.
Women over 40 building strength — Particularly suited to progressive resistance training at home — effective for body composition, bone density, and energy levels without the gym floor environment.
Those recovering from injury — Home sessions allow precise, supervised rehabilitation work without the risk of overdoing it on unfamiliar gym equipment.
Anyone with gym anxiety — Home training removes every element of the gym experience that causes anxiety — crowds, mirrors, judgement, noise — while delivering better coached results.

Frequently Asked Questions

What equipment does a home personal trainer bring?

Adjustable dumbbells, kettlebells, resistance bands, a suspension trainer, mat, foam roller, skipping rope, agility ladder, and more. DC Personal Trainer brings a full kit covering strength, cardio, mobility, and HIIT — you need nothing at home.

Do I need any equipment for home personal training?

No. You need a clear space roughly 2m x 1m — that's it. No weights, no machines, no home gym. Everything comes with me.

How much space do I need?

Roughly the size of a yoga mat — about 2 metres by 1 metre. Most living rooms, bedrooms, and gardens are more than sufficient. Works in flats and terraced houses just as well as large homes.

Is home personal training as effective as the gym?

Yes, for the vast majority of goals. Research shows free-weight and bodyweight training produces equivalent strength and fat loss results to machine-based gym training. What matters is programme quality and progressive overload — not the building.

Can a home personal trainer help with weight loss?

Yes. Strength training with free weights and bands builds muscle and raises your resting metabolic rate. Combined with the nutritional guidance included in every session, home PT produces consistent, lasting fat loss results.

What if I live in a flat or have limited space?

Not a problem. Programmes are designed around your space. With 2 metres of clear floor, a full session is possible. For very limited indoor space, sessions can move outside — garden, driveway, or local park.
