Runner on a scenic trail in a South Manchester park

After 15 years of personal training in Sale, Altrincham, Hale, and Hale Barns, I've explored every path, park, and canal towpath in the area. Whether you're a complete beginner looking for a flat, easy route or an experienced runner seeking longer distances, this guide covers the best running spots in South Manchester.

Sale Water Park - The Local Favourite

Location: Sale M33
Distance: 2.5km loop
Difficulty: Easy

Sale Water Park is the crown jewel of running in Sale. The main lake loop offers a flat, well-maintained path that's perfect for beginners and interval training alike. Early mornings are particularly peaceful, with wildlife on the water and minimal foot traffic.

Best for: Beginners, interval training, easy recovery runs. The 2.5km loop means you can easily track your progress and add laps as you improve.

Pro tip: Park at the main car park off Rifle Road. The path is lit in parts, making it suitable for early morning winter runs.

Bridgewater Canal Towpath

Location: Sale to Altrincham
Distance: 3-10km+
Difficulty: Easy-Moderate

The Bridgewater Canal towpath is a hidden gem for longer runs. Starting from Sale, you can run all the way to Altrincham (and beyond to Dunham Massey if you're feeling ambitious). The path is flat, traffic-free, and offers a peaceful escape from road running.

Best for: Long-distance training, marathon preparation, peaceful solo runs. The flat terrain makes it ideal for maintaining a consistent pace.

Pro tip: The section between Sale and Timperley is particularly scenic. Be mindful of cyclists and keep left when running.

Stamford Park, Altrincham

Location: Altrincham WA14
Distance: 1.5km loop
Difficulty: Easy-Moderate

Stamford Park in Altrincham offers a beautiful Victorian park setting for your runs. The paths wind through mature trees, past a lake, and through well-maintained gardens. It's slightly hillier than Sale Water Park, which adds a gentle challenge.

Best for: Scenic runs, hill training (gentle inclines), family-friendly running with pushchairs.

Pro tip: Combine with a loop around the nearby streets for a 5km route. The park hosts parkrun on Saturday mornings if you want a social running experience.

Dunham Massey Estate

Location: Near Hale Barns
Distance: 3-8km
Difficulty: Moderate

For trail running near Hale Barns, Dunham Massey can't be beaten. The National Trust estate offers woodland trails, deer park paths, and beautiful scenery year-round. Note that you'll need National Trust membership or pay for parking during opening hours.

Best for: Trail running, off-road training, nature lovers. The varied terrain builds strength and stability.

Pro tip: Early morning runs before the estate opens are free and peaceful. The deer are often more visible at dawn.

Trans Pennine Trail - Altrincham to Timperley

Location: Altrincham/Timperley
Distance: 5km+ (one way)
Difficulty: Easy

The Trans Pennine Trail runs through our area on a converted railway line, meaning it's completely flat and traffic-free. Access points in Altrincham and Timperley make it easy to plan out-and-back runs of any distance.

Best for: Tempo runs, long-distance training, running with friends side-by-side. The wide path means no dodging other users.

Pro tip: Start from Timperley Metrolink and run towards Dunham for a scenic 10km return route.

Hale & Hale Barns Neighbourhood Routes

Location: Hale/Hale Barns
Distance: 3-7km
Difficulty: Easy-Moderate

The leafy streets of Hale and Hale Barns offer pleasant road running with wide pavements and relatively quiet traffic. A popular route loops from Hale village, through Hale Barns, and back via the golf course edges.

Best for: Road running, doorstep runs, evening runs with street lighting.

Pro tip: Run early on weekend mornings when traffic is minimal. The area around Ringway Road offers longer stretches with good pavements.
