Glute Training Workouts: Build Stronger, More Powerful Glutes
Your complete guide to building stronger glutes with sample workouts for every fitness level. From hip thrusts to Romanian deadlifts—master the exercises that deliver real results.

Strong glutes aren't just about aesthetics—they're essential for athletic performance, injury prevention, and everyday movement. After 15 years training clients across Sale, Altrincham, and Hale Barns, I've seen how proper glute training transforms posture, reduces back pain, and boosts overall strength. Here's everything you need to know.
Why Glute Training Matters
The Powerhouse Muscles
Your glutes are the largest muscle group in your body. They drive hip extension, stabilise your pelvis, and power virtually every lower body movement—from walking and climbing stairs to sprinting and jumping.
Power & Performance
Strong glutes generate explosive power for running, jumping, and athletic movements.
Injury Prevention
Weak glutes contribute to knee pain, hip issues, and lower back problems.
Better Posture
Developed glutes support proper spinal alignment and reduce anterior pelvic tilt.
The Best Glute Exercises
Not all exercises are created equal when it comes to glute activation. Here are the most effective movements I use with my clients:
1. Hip Thrusts
The king of glute exercises. Hip thrusts provide maximum glute activation through a full range of motion with constant tension.
How to: Sit with your upper back against a bench, feet flat on the floor. Drive through your heels, squeezing your glutes at the top. Lower with control.
2. Romanian Deadlifts (RDLs)
Excellent for targeting the glutes through hip hinge movement while also strengthening hamstrings.
How to: Hold weights in front of thighs, push hips back while keeping a slight knee bend. Lower until you feel a hamstring stretch, then drive hips forward to stand.
3. Bulgarian Split Squats
A unilateral exercise that builds single-leg strength and addresses muscle imbalances.
How to: Rear foot elevated on a bench, lower your back knee toward the floor while keeping your front knee tracking over your toes. Push through your front heel to stand.
4. Glute Bridges
Perfect for beginners or as a glute activation warm-up before heavier exercises.
How to: Lie on your back, feet flat on floor, knees bent. Drive through your heels, lifting hips until your body forms a straight line. Squeeze glutes at the top.
5. Cable Kickbacks
Isolation exercise providing constant tension throughout the movement for maximum glute engagement.
How to: Attach ankle strap to low cable. Face the machine, kick your leg straight back, squeezing your glute at the top. Control the return.
6. Sumo Deadlifts
Wide stance deadlift variation that emphasises glute and inner thigh activation.
How to: Wide stance, toes pointed out. Grip the bar inside your knees. Drive through your heels, pushing your hips forward to stand.

Pro Tips for Maximum Glute Growth
Mind-Muscle Connection
Focus on feeling your glutes work. If you only feel it in your quads or hamstrings, adjust your form or reduce the weight.
Progressive Overload
Gradually increase weight, reps, or sets each week. Your glutes need to be challenged to grow.
Full Range of Motion
Don't cut movements short. Complete the full range for maximum muscle activation and growth.
Rest & Recovery
Allow 48-72 hours between glute sessions. Muscles grow during rest, not during the workout.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- •Hyperextending the lower back during hip thrusts—keep your core engaged and chin tucked
- •Rushing through reps—slow, controlled movements with a squeeze at peak contraction
- •Neglecting warm-up—activate glutes with bands before heavy lifting
- •Only training in one rep range—mix heavy (6-8) and moderate (12-15) for complete development
